UPLOADING INSTRUCTIONS

Uploading is the process of copying a document from your computer to the LawyerShare.com database.  It is as simple as sending an attachment to an email.  You will earn a credit for each document uploaded and will be able to spend those credits to download other documents. Uploading has no effect on the document in your computer, as only a copy is made.

What documents are okay?: Generally, any document filed or served in a court case is a public document.  Use your own discretion. By changing or removing the names of the parties and/or removing the index number, you can upload an otherwise privileged or protected document.  Please use Word 97-2003 or Wordperfect compatible documents.  Those are preferable over pdf files.  Note: MS Office 2007 uses a new document format called docx that is not compatible with earlier versions of Word.  Therefore, please save your document as a Word 97-2003 compatible document in your computer prior to uploading.  Simply open the document, then click "save as".  When the save screen opens, change the document type to Word 97-2003 or similar.

How do I Upload?:
1) Select an Area of Law/Category for your document from the “Destination Category” drop down menu.  If there is no relevant Area of Law/Category, you can add one by choosing “Create Category” on top of this page.   You can also choose to add a sub-category, if applicable.

2) Now you must click on “Browse”.  This will open up your computer directory.  Choose the correct folder(s) in your computer directory in order to locate the document on your computer.  Once you locate the appropriate document, double click it or select “Open”.  This will attach the document to the Upload page.

3) Next, choose a name for the document (e.g., threshold summary judgment motion).  The name should appropriately describe the document.

4) In the Keyword box, please insert as many words/terms as possible to describe your legal document.   Use words and phrases that another user may use to locate your document, including important “buzz” words. PLEASE DO NOT ABBREVIATE (Abbreviating will adversely and severely affect searches).  Separate the words/text only with spaces and no commas or other punctuation (e.g. motion summary judgment negligence construction site labor law 240 241(6) fall ladder accident out of possession owner landlord insurance strict liability).   This will help other users locate your document.

5) Lastly, from the drop down menu, please select the Jurisdiction (State, Federal, Non-USA) to which your document applies.  If none, select “Not Applicable” at the top.  Then enter the security code in the box below the code and click “Submit”.  You have now earned ONE credit for uploading the document.
YOU CAN REPEAT THIS PROCESS AND UPLOAD AS MANY OTHER DOCUMENTS AS YOU DESIRE.
